Chapter 19

Isabelle was frustrated beyond belief. Her restaurant had reopened a few days earlier and the place was packed every night. It was no different tonight and it was reserved completely every day for the rest of the week. Anyone would think she’d be relieved, but the problem was, she’d lost several of her staff.

Her sous chef Gwen, Milly and Jake returned to work, but only one of her busboys had returned. The other two found other jobs and Angelina moved to Labrador to be with her boyfriend. That meant she was left with only two waiters.

Hulk’s friend Caroline joined her staff but Isabelle had to put her on the floor as a waitress, which left Isabelle out of the kitchen and on hostess duty, again. To top it off, Bryce, his father and a brunette with over-inflated boobs and an underdeveloped IQ walked into the restaurant with no reservation.

“Ms. O’Connor, it’s so good to see your wonderful restaurant opened again.” Stanley Landell smiled.

Stanley was a tall, slim, and bald, or at least he would be if he didn’t do the most horrible comb-over. He was probably in his early fifties, but time had not been good to him. He seemed like a nice man for the most part, but a prickle skittered up the back of her neck when he grabbed her hand and kissed it.

“We hit a little bump in the road but we’re on track now.” Isabelle tried to reclaim her hand without being rude.

“I see you’re pretty full tonight.” Bryce smirked as he glanced around.

“Yes, we’re booked up all week.” Isabelle stepped behind the podium and Stanley finally released her hand.

“I’m sure you could fit our little group in for supper.” Stanley grinned.

“I honestly can’t. All our tables are full right now. I’ve got another party waiting at the bar and as you can see behind you, we have another group coming in for their reservation.” Isabelle put emphasis on the word reservation as she nodded to the four businessmen watching her.

“Even for an old friend?” Bryce purred.

“Not even for any of my family,” Isabelle replied, but of course that wasn’t true.

Where Bryce got the idea that they were old friends, she had no idea. She’d known the man less than a year and would never describe him as a friend. Annoyance maybe.

Isabelle motioned for the group behind Bryce to come around the Landells and explained there would be a few minutes’ wait. She pointed them to the bar, and assured them the waitress would let them know when their table was ready. She hoped when she turned back to the podium Stanley, Bryce and the woman would have left.

“Do you think if we wait we could squeeze in?” Stanley pushed.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Landell, I just can’t do it.” Isabelle was getting annoyed and she had to pee.

“What a dump,” the woman mumbled as she tossed her hair over her shoulder and pouted.

“If you want, you can make a reservation for next week, but we’re booked up until next Wednesday.
